Locus Hill, Jefferson County WV
Locust Hill is a historic plantation located in Charles Town, West Virginia. It was originally built in the late 18th century and has been home to several prominent families throughout its history. The main house at Locust Hill is a two-and-a-half-story brick structure with a central hallway and two wings. It features a hipped roof with dormers and a symmetrical facade with a central entrance and flanking windows. The interior of the house includes original woodwork and plasterwork, as well as period furnishings. In addition to the main house, the plantation also includes several outbuildings, including a brick icehouse, a stone smokehouse, and a wood-framed barn. The property is surrounded by extensive gardens and landscaped grounds, which feature mature trees, flower beds, and a large lawn. Locust Hill has a rich history, with connections to several notable figures and events. The plantation was originally owned by George Washington's younger brother, Charles Washington, who named it after a large locust tree on the property. It later passed through several owners before being purchased by the Washington family in the mid-19th century
